The Power Trail: History of Hydroelectricity at Niagara

The architecture that has housed the technology of the Industrial Revolution is often overlooked and viewed as utilitarian. These palaces of and for power that fueled the creative minds of great men are infused with rich history and amazing technological innovations. Nikola Tesla compared the Hydroelectric Power Plants at Niagara to the pyramids of Egypt, the temples of the Greek and the cathedrals of Christendom and indeed they carry the same importance and beauty. They are a reflection of our economic, social and creative consciousness. These power plants symbolize the unquestionable belief in human progress and invention as well as striving for the betterment of society as a whole. The history of Hydroelectricity at Niagara, set against the backdrop of Industrial Revolution, reflects the delicate balance between Man's conquering of nature and nature's triumph over man.

Jana Kasikova received a Masters Degree in Architecture in 2005 from the University at Buffalo and has worked at a number of architecture firms in Buffalo, NY. She is currently working at a firm in Chicago specializing in urban residential projects and rehabilitation work. She was a co-designer of a proposal for the reuse of an industrial site in the Czech Republic in 2005. Thanks to my family, here and abroad, who have inspired me over the years.
