Paul McCarthy was born and had his early education in Rochester, New York.
He entered the Society of Jesus, the Roman Catholic religious order of Jesuits, in 1944.
After doing graduate studies in chemistry and theology he taught chemistry at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. from 1960 until his retirement from teaching in 1994.
Since that time he has been doing pastoral work at St. Thomas More Parish in Sandy, Utah.
