In the opening days of the last century, people from all walks of life were drawn to an inspirational figure who made Western New York his home. Elbert Hubbard (or, Fra Elbertus) lived and taught at the Roycroft in East Aurora, creating a passionate experience that seekers are drawn to, even to this day.
Mottoes were the quotable quotes or epigrams that the Roycrofters printed and prepared for matting or framing. Usually, they were one of Hubbard's crafty sayings, but they also included the words of those he admired: Emerson, Franklin, Shakespeare, Lincoln...
"From this day on, I mean to do the best I can. If I am right, time will prove it. If I am not right, ten angels swearing I am right will not make it so." -- Lincoln
