Books: By Title: The Rainbow City
Celebrating Light, Color, and Architecture at the Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo 1901
The Rainbow
City revisits the 1901 Pan-American Exposition held in
thriving Buffalo, New York, then the eighth largest city in the
U.S., to reveal the ambitious color and architectural scheme that
symbolically depicted and celebrated the progress of
civilization.
Announcing the story of Buffalo's glorious moment in 160 pages and more than 200 images, written by Kerry S. Grant of the University at Buffalo; introduced by William H. Siener of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society; and designed by national award-winning designer David Buck.
The text of The Rainbow City is supported by recently restored paintings by John Ross Key, last exhibited fifty years ago; color renderings of the Exposition, many of which have never been displayed or published; and original promotional pieces, advertisements, and paraphernalia. This volume draws upon images and artifacts from private collections and the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society.
"This is the Pan-American . . . the spirit of Holiday embodied and marvelously garbed; the progress of twenty centuries typified and made radiant." PERRITON MAXWELL, THE METROPOLITAN MAGAZINE, 1901
In the spirit of the original unity of Buffalo's leaders who planned the Exposition together, The Rainbow City is the result of a collaboration between the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York; the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society; Canisius College; and Crowley Webb and Associates.
